COMPASS-Price Index

Each week Compass data collectors in 5 Myanmar centres collect the prices of basic food (meat, vegetables, fruit, rice, beans & pulses), plus a range of other staple consumer items including fuel, toiletries and medicines.

Price data is also collected on an appropriate timing basis for household expenditure on education, electricity, water, council rates, and clothing.

Benchmark and annual surveys are used to calculate the household “grocery basket”. This then enables a weighted CPI index to be created and tracked over time.

Regular surveys are also undertaken to collect household income and demographic data. Matching this to the CPI results, we are able to provide a segmented view of the population’s average income and expenditure over time.

Compass Research has modeled its CPI sampling and research methodology on overseas best practice, providing a very robust measure of this key economic indicator.
