Quantitative Research
Compass Research has conducted
more than 100,000 interviews across Myanmar with respondents who have
participated in quantitative surveys. A range of sampling methodologies,
questionnaires and languages have been used to sample populations of
interest to our clients on a variety of topics. Compass is involved in all
stages of the research projects - research design; development of sampling
frames, questionnaires, field and quality control systems; field staff
selection, training and monitoring; data management; analysis and
reporting. The following provides some detail of the quantitative projects
Compass has conducted.
Knowledge, Attitude &
Practices (KAP) Surveys
-
KAP surveys have been
conducted with the general population measuring behaviour and attitudes
that impact on people's reproductive health; and with at-risk target
groups (sex workers, transport workers, fishermen, miners, youth)
measuring behaviours and attitudes that impact on their HIV/AIDS risks
and prevention. Key indicator data for health programs has been
collected as well as brand, media usage and demographic data for use in
social marketing programs.
-
These KAP surveys have been
designed as baseline surveys and tracking rounds are planned so that
change in behaviours, attitudes and knowledge can be measured over time.
-
Special training programs
have been designed and delivered by Compass to ensure the interviewers
had the required skills to interview respondents effectively about their
sexual behaviours and attitudes.
-
Other KAP surveys conducted
have collected data on consumer product purchasing behaviours,
advertising recall, social norms and beliefs among the general
population.
Household Expenditure Surveys
Baseline Health Surveys
-
A baseline health survey
conducted in remote areas of northern Rakhine State collected data on
immunization, nutrition, water and sanitation, housing and demographics.
Program Monitoring &
Evaluation
-
In 2000, Compass conducted a
quantitative survey in 55 randomly selected and often remote, townships
of Myanmar to evaluate immunization coverage of women of childbearing
age and their children. UNICEF and Myanmar's Department of Health
commissioned the survey.
-
Quantitative surveys have
also been conducted to evaluate communication and information campaigns
funded by UN agencies and implemented by local organizations.
-
Evaluations of INGO service
delivery to communities have been conducted using quantitative household
surveys.
-
The quantitative components
of these evaluation studies have tended to be results-based and have
been complemented by qualitative phases of the research that have
evaluated process.
Mapping And Target Group
Population Estimation
-
For surveys that have
involved specific target populations (sex workers, transport workers,
fishermen, unemployed male youth, truck drivers, miners, …) Compass has
conducted mapping exercises where field staff have mapped sites where
target group populations can be found, counted population members
present at different times and collected information about the
populations frequenting those sites. This primary source information has
then been used in conjunction with secondary data sources (when
available) to estimate population sizes. Population size estimates were
then used to build sampling frames for quantitative surveys.
